Sanjay Manjrekar Urges Consistency from KL Rahul Ahead of Second Test
Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has challenged KL Rahul to demonstrate greater consistency in Test cricket, particularly as he steps into a more senior role following the departures of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
Rahul, now among the most experienced players in India's relatively youthful batting order, is expected to provide both stability and leadership while consistently delivering with the bat. His performance is crucial for the team's success in the ongoing series.
In contrast, Rishabh Pant has solidified his position in India's batting lineup. Pant recently achieved a remarkable feat, becoming only the second wicketkeeper in cricket history to score twin centuries in a Test match, emulating Andy Flower's achievement.
Manjrekar particularly praised Pant's dedication to the longer format of the game following his two centuries in the Leeds Test. "Any batter who gets two hundreds in a Test match, it takes a lot out of you mentally…So that is a hallmark of an exceptional player," Manjrekar stated on Star Sports.
Manjrekar stressed that KL Rahul must avoid inconsistent performances and maintain consistency throughout the series. Indian cricket needs Rahul to perform consistently, avoiding the label of a "one-hundred wonder" or a "one-Test-match performer."
As India navigates this transitional phase, the spotlight is now firmly on Rahul. Increased expectations are placed upon him as he assumes the mantle of the senior-most batter in India's Test lineup. Pant's recent performance has set a high standard, highlighting his ability to consistently deliver in the red-ball format. It will be up to the more experienced players to guide the team through this period and assist the younger players in adapting to Test cricket.
