Former World No. 1 Maria Sharapova voiced her approval of Carlos Alcaraz’s new buzz-cut hairstyle during the 2025 US Open. On August 25, the 22-year-old Spaniard unveiled the fresh look in his opening-round match against American Reilly Opelka, drawing mixed reactions from fans online.
Sharapova, who was recently inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, admitted she was more captivated by his hairstyle than his tennis. She praised its simplicity and low-maintenance appeal, adding that Alcaraz carried the change with remarkable confidence.
The five-time Grand Slam champion also highlighted that many players might be too hesitant or superstitious to alter their appearance during a major tournament, making his bold choice stand out even more.
“I haven’t gotten to the tennis. I’m still stuck at the buzz cut. It’s so low maintenance. And he just did it. That’s a good effort. I’d be so superstitious. But that’s what you have to love about him is just his ability to be so free and so confident and have this particular aura about him that transcends the game,” Sharapova told ESPN.
Alcaraz later joked about his new look, asking fans, “I’ve got to know if people like the haircut or not. Did you like it, guys? I think they did.”
Alcaraz opened his U.S. Open campaign with a commanding straight-sets win over the big-serving Opelka, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4. The second seed showcased poise and precision, breaking once in each set while fending off all three break points he faced.
He finished with 23 winners against 17 unforced errors, landed 86 per cent of first serves, and extended his flawless record in Grand Slam openers to 19-0. Though Opelka’s booming serve posed challenges, Alcaraz controlled the rallies from the baseline, underlining his authority and confidence as he advanced to the second round.
In the second round, Alcaraz will lock horns with Italy’s Mattia Bellucci, who eased China’s Shang Juncheng 7-6, 1-6, 6-3, 3-0 after the latter retired midway after an issue with his right thigh.
