Emma Raducanu’s lucky red outfit failed to work its charm on Friday as she bowed out of the US Open 2025. In her third-round clash at Flushing Meadows, Raducanu was beaten by Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina. Until then, Raducanu had enjoyed a perfect record in red at the tournament, winning nine straight matches without dropping a set. It was also in red that she memorably lifted the 2021 US Open title at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
This time, however, Rybakina was in complete control. The 2022 Wimbledon champion dominated from start to finish, handing Raducanu a 6-1, 6-2 defeat in just an hour and two minutes at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. The win also marked Rybakina’s first-ever progression to the fourth round of the US Open.
US Open 2025 Day 6 Updates
Rybakina has now been to the fourth round in all four Grand Slams. Despite the comfortable scoreline, Rybakina admitted Raducanu made her work.
“Yeah, it’s true. Over the years, for some reason, the US Open hasn’t really been successful for me. Hopefully, this year will be different. I’m really happy to be getting through, and I’ll try to go as far as possible. Thank you so much for the support,” Raducanu said in her on-court interview.
“I’m really happy with my performance. It’s never easy playing Emma — sometimes the score doesn’t reflect it, but she’s a tough competitor. I’m pleased with the way I played today and I’m looking forward to the next match,” Rybakina added.
The first set lasted only 26 minutes, as Rybakina raced ahead with a double break and never looked back. Raducanu struggled to counter her opponent’s pace and precision, offering little resistance.
In the second set, Rybakina again secured an early break and maintained her advantage. Serving at 5-2, 40-15, she earned two match points and sealed victory on the first when Raducanu’s forehand drifted long.
Rybakina will next face the winner of the clash between Marketa Vondrousova and Jasmine Paolini.
