LAS VEGAS – Ilia Topuria delivered on his bold prediction, securing a stunning first-round knockout victory over Charles Oliveira at UFC 317 to claim the vacant lightweight title.
Topuria (17-0) etched his name in UFC history, becoming the tenth two-weight champion, after dispatching Oliveira at 2:27 of the opening round. A sharp right hand to Oliveira's chin, followed by a left hook, sealed the deal, sending the Brazilian crashing to the canvas.
Notably, Topuria stands alone as the only two-weight champion in UFC history to maintain an unblemished, undefeated record.
"I already said it," declared Topuria, who exuded confidence by holding a celebratory dinner the night before the fight. "I represent the new era of mixed martial arts. This is the next level of the game."
The UFC immediately ignited a potential future rivalry by bringing Paddy Pimblett into the octagon after the fight. Pimblett, the No. 8-ranked lightweight from Liverpool, England, has a history with Topuria stemming from comments made about the Russo-Georgian War of 2008.
Pimblett and Topuria faced off, setting the stage for a potential showdown. Earlier in the week, Topuria expressed his desire to fight Pimblett in his first title defense, ideally in Las Vegas.
"If he thinks he's ready, come on. You blond b----," Topuria challenged.
Beyond the post-fight theatrics, Topuria's performance showcased his dominance. He successfully defended against Oliveira's takedown attempts and reversed a half-trip to gain top position against the renowned submission artist.
This victory further solidifies Topuria's legacy in MMA. He has now achieved knockout wins against three legendary fighters, including former featherweight champions Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway.
Looking ahead, Topuria has also expressed interest in facing former lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, who recently vacated his title in anticipation of a move to the welterweight division.
