Clarke to Gambhir: Kuldeep Yadav Inclusion a "No-Brainer" for India's Second Test vs. England

Thursday - 31/07/2025 06:03
Following India's defeat in the first Test against England, former Australia captain Michael Clarke advocates for Kuldeep Yadav's inclusion in the second Test at Edgbaston. Clarke emphasizes Kuldeep's wicket-taking ability, suggesting India prioritizes bowlers who can secure 20 wickets. Echoing this sentiment, former England batter Nick Knight believes Kuldeep's variations could challenge England's aggressive batting.

Clarke Urges India: Play Kuldeep Yadav in Second Test Against England

As India prepares for the pivotal second Test against England at Edgbaston, changes to the playing XI are anticipated following their defeat in the series opener. A key point of discussion is the potential resting of Jasprit Bumrah for workload management. Besides Bumrah, other players might be omitted as coach Gautam Gambhir seeks a more potent team composition to level the series.

Former Australian captain Michael Clarke has voiced a strong opinion regarding one specific change. He believes wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav should be included in the next match. Speaking on the Beyond23 Podcast, Clarke emphasized that Kuldeep's inclusion is a "no-brainer."

India's bowling attack struggled to make a significant impact at Headingley. While Bumrah impressed with his control and skill, the supporting bowlers, including Mohammed Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, and Prasidh Krishna, failed to maintain consistent pressure or take wickets regularly. Clarke suggests Kuldeep could be the solution to this problem.

“Bowling-wise, I do not want to single out anyone for blame, but India have to play Kuldeep Yadav. He is a genuine wicket-taker and could have made a big difference in the last Test,” Clarke stated.

Clarke also highlighted a recurring issue where India prioritizes extending their batting lineup, even at the expense of their primary spinner. He argues that in English conditions, the focus should be on selecting bowlers capable of taking 20 wickets.

Nick Knight, the former England batter, shares similar sentiments and supports Kuldeep’s inclusion. Knight suggests that England’s aggressive batting style could be challenged by Kuldeep’s variations, particularly if the Edgbaston pitch offers any assistance to spin. Knight believes Kuldeep has the potential to create game-changing moments if he finds his rhythm.

The team announcement for the second Test is eagerly awaited as the calls for Kuldeep’s inclusion grow stronger.
