Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers has raised concerns about India's management of Jasprit Bumrah's workload ahead of the ongoing Test series against England. De Villiers suggests that India may have missed an opportunity to ensure Bumrah's availability for the entire five-match series.
Prior to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, it was confirmed that Bumrah would only participate in three of the five Test matches. Despite his presence in the first Test in Leeds, India suffered a five-wicket defeat. Although Bumrah claimed a five-wicket haul in the first innings, his efforts were insufficient to secure a victory as England successfully chased down a target of 371.
Despite the loss, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has maintained that the team's plan regarding Bumrah remains unchanged. Bumrah is scheduled to play in only two more Tests in the series.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, De Villiers playfully hinted that India might surprise everyone by fielding Bumrah in all five Tests.
"It is unfortunate that, with an inexperienced bowling attack, he's not going to play all the Test matches. Maybe it's all part of a surprise... But perhaps this is also an opportunity for someone like Arshdeep Singh or Kuldeep Yadav to step up," De Villiers commented.
Realistically, it is improbable that Bumrah will play more than three Tests, considering his explicit statements about his fitness and workload management. He has consulted with medical professionals regarding his body's capacity to withstand the demands of Test cricket.
Furthermore, Bumrah disclosed that he declined an offer to captain the Test side, prioritizing his physical well-being and long-term availability for India.
De Villiers argued that India should have devised a more comprehensive plan to guarantee Bumrah's full availability for this crucial series.
"He's probably the best bowler in the world across all formats right now. So, it's incredibly difficult to find the right time to rest him," De Villiers stated.
He drew a parallel to how South Africa managed Dale Steyn's workload, ensuring he was at his peak for major Test tours.
De Villiers acknowledged that Bumrah's recent return from injury and potential medical advice might have influenced the decision. He emphasized the importance of Team India managing Bumrah wisely.
With Bumrah's participation in the second Test in Birmingham uncertain, India might have to rely on less experienced players such as Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh.
