Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has stirred the pot with his comments regarding a potential trade involving Sanju Samson. Chopra noted reports suggesting the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are interested in acquiring the Rajasthan Royals (RR) star ahead of the IPL 2026 season.
Chopra, now a prominent cricket analyst, expressed his intrigue at how Rajasthan Royals might respond to such offers, particularly from CSK. He speculated that RR could demand a high-profile player like Ravindra Jadeja in return.
According to sources, several Rajasthan Royals players have attracted interest from other franchises since the trading window opened on June 4th. This window will remain open until a week before the 2026 players' auction, and will reopen after the auction, closing one month before the new season begins.
Chopra elaborated on his YouTube channel: "Will this trade materialize? CSK's interest is known, but discussions haven't reached the stage of specific player exchanges. Rajasthan might request Ashwin or Jadeja in return, which is their prerogative if the trade progresses."
Samson has been a pivotal figure for the Royals since his return in 2018, following a stint with Delhi Capitals. RR demonstrated their faith in him by retaining him as their first-choice player, investing ₹18 crore.
However, the team's current batting lineup boasts several options. Dhruv Jurel has impressed as a wicketkeeper-batter, and Vaibhav Suryavanshi emerged as a standout performer in IPL 2025.
Chopra highlighted the possibility of Samson succeeding MS Dhoni as a wicketkeeper-batter for Chennai Super Kings. CSK, are actively seeking a long-term replacement for their legendary captain.
CSK signed Urvil Patel as a replacement player in IPL 2025. While Patel showed promise alongside youngsters Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis, questions linger about his readiness to fully replace Dhoni.
"A CSK insider confirmed their interest in Samson, citing his potential to be a great asset as a keeper-batter while they plan for the future beyond MS Dhoni," Chopra stated.
He further added, "I had also considered Dhruv Jurel and even Rishabh Pant for CSK. This team needs a high-caliber wicketkeeper-batter to carry forward MS Dhoni's legacy."
Dhoni's decision regarding the 2026 season remains unconfirmed. The veteran cricketer, who will turn 45 next year, has indicated he's in no rush to decide his future. Regardless, CSK must prepare for the post-Dhoni era.
