ENG vs IND: Yashasvi Jaiswal can become the fastest Indian to 2000 Test runs in the second Test starting July 2 at the Edgbaston in Birmingham.

Yashasvi Jaiswal stands on the cusp of etching his name in Indian cricket history during the upcoming second Test against England, starting July 2nd at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The young opener has the opportunity to become the fastest Indian to reach 2000 Test runs, potentially eclipsing a 26-year-old record jointly held by Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag.

Dravid set the benchmark in 1999 against New Zealand in Hamilton, a feat matched by Sehwag in 2004 versus Australia in Chennai.

Since his Test debut against the West Indies in July 2023, Jaiswal has amassed an impressive 1,903 runs in 38 innings, boasting an average of 52.86. He now has the chance to surpass the milestone in the upcoming Test match.

Here’s a look at the list of fastest Indians to reach 2000 Test runs:

  • Rahul Dravid (40 innings) - against New Zealand, Hamilton, 1999
  • Virender Sehwag (40 innings) - against Australia, Chennai, 2001
  • Vijay Hazare (43 innings) - against West Indies, Port of Spain, 1953
  • Gautam Gambhir (43 innings) - against New Zealand, Napier, 2009
  • Sunil Gavaskar (44 innings) - against West Indies, Port of Spain, 1976

Jaiswal's Recent Performance

During the first Test at Headingley in Leeds, despite India's defeat by five wickets, Jaiswal showcased his potential. He scored a fluent 101 off 159 balls in the first innings, which included 16 boundaries and one six. He was eventually dismissed by England captain Ben Stokes.

However, he couldn't maintain the same momentum in the second innings, getting out for just four runs off 11 deliveries, falling victim to Brydon Carse.

The young player will also be aiming to improve his fielding skills, especially after dropping four catches in the Leeds Test.
